Trumpets (Gavin and Haiden no instrument)

What we did
  • Assessed Performance Targets for Line 16; Taliya and Alex are close but need different points of focus
    • Taliya - We discussed strategies how to develop a firmer embouchure at the corners and how to support the air stream better. She had success today but not consistent.
    • Alex - Pinching at the aperture and supporting from the upper chest; needs to relax his embouchure, blow from the diaphragm so he doesn't have to squeeze so hard.
    • Both are approaching articulation by spitting at the notes and not blowing through.
  • Developed Performance Targets for line 17

What to do
  • Meet performance targets for line 16 and 17

Looking Ahead
  • Meet Performance Goals on line 23, 25 and begin "Let's Go Band" and other All-City Music

Notes
  • I am very concerned with the slow progress of this group. It has to do with a great lack of preparation.
  • Is this correlated to their academics?

Trombones (All present;Caleb No Book)

What we did
  • Assessed Performance Targets for Line 7
    • Caleb did ok. Still needs much more support for a fuller tone; practice to develop muscle memory stabilizing the pitch center
    • Malakee still struggles with the concept of centering the pitch; he is not using the strategies we discuss in lessons to improve; Although he may be working at home, he is not establishing and working toward improving sound and reading the music.
  • Developed performance targets for line 17 and 23

What to do
  • Stefan meet performance goals from 34 and 39; He can continue as far as he understands
    • Stefan is a very mature player for 5th grade; I would still like to engrain a more relaxed style of playing for him.
  • Malakee and Caleb: Meet performance goals from 16, 17, 23 and LGB

Looking Ahead
  • Eighth note rhythms

Notes
  • Caleb and Malakee are capable players but their progress is slow.
    • Caleb cannot practice from the book because he still does not own one.
    • Malakee needs to be more focused on setting and meeting his goals.

Percussion (Sierra Ab; All others present with instrument)

What we did
  • Assessed performance targets for lines 16 and 17
    • Concepts of reading are not being practiced at home; Marvin shows the most promise, Shane is showing some but Isaiah leaves his instrument at school so little to no progress is being made

What to do
  • Clap and Count rhythms for lesson 6 and 7
  • Begin to establish single bounce stroke on same lessons
  • Meet performance targets for line 17 and 23 on Bells

Looking Ahead
  • Reading and playing Snare/Bass parts using Haskell-Harr
  • Flam rudiments
  • Buzz stroke

Notes
  • Slow progress from students; lack of preparation for lessons
  • Isaiah has not had his instrument in school for quite some time. He also has a lack of focus when in class. Quite concerned
